The Dolphin Research Center offers an Internship Program within its Volunteer Resources Department, providing opportunities to develop career skills and gain insight into marine mammal facility operations. Internships last 16 to 18 weeks and involve concentration in specific departments, requiring 40 hours per week, with four days focused on the designated department and one day supporting other areas. The internships are unpaid, and applicants don't need to be enrolled in college.
Supplemental projects are assigned based on DRC's needs and interns' skills and interests. Interns pursue individual independent study goals, and college credit seekers can incorporate coursework. Departments available for internships include Animal Care and Training, Education, Information Technologies, Medical, Research, and Visual Communications.
Applicants must be proficient in English, physically fit to lift 50 pounds and work outdoors in Florida's heat, sunshine, and humidity. Interns are responsible for their own housing, food, and local transportation, though assistance in finding housing is available. The application deadlines are October 1 for the Winter Term, February 1 for the Summer Term, and June 15 for the Fall Term. Interested individuals can complete a Volunteer/Internship Candidate Application Form online.
